Taster Series
Curious to try something new?
The Taster Series is designed for beginners and the fibre-curious, with hands-on sessions that introduce you to a range of traditional techniques. Guided by the talented makers from the Handweavers and Spinners Guild of Victoria, you’ll learn, create and gain confidence in a welcoming environment.

Weaving Taster

Time: 10:00am (1 hour 20 minutes)
Location: Red Earth Room
Weaving for Beginners
Discover the joy of weaving in this hands-on, beginner-friendly session.
You’ll learn the basics on a 4-shaft table loom, explore simple patterns, and create your own woven piece to take home.
All materials are provided, so just bring your enthusiasm and creativity!
Spinning Taster

Time: 11:30am (1 hour 20 minutes)
Location: Red Earth Room
Spinning for Beginners
Discover the basics of spinning in this hands-on, beginner-friendly session.
You’ll learn how to use a spinning wheel to turn fibre into yarn, try it yourself, and take home your own hand-spun creations.
All materials are provided, so just bring your enthusiasm and curiosity!
Spindling Taster

Time: 1:00pm (1 hour 20 minutes)
Location: Red Earth Room
Drop Spindle for Beginners
Discover the ancient craft of spinning using a drop spindle in this hands-on, beginner-friendly session.
You’ll learn how to turn fibre into yarn, try it yourself, and take home your own creations.
All materials are provided, and additional spindle and fibre packs will be available to continue your journey at home!
Workshops: Take Your Fibre Skills Further
Step beyond the basics and immerse yourself in your craft. Our workshops are designed for makers who want to refine techniques, explore advanced skills, and create more intricate projects. Led by expert members of the Handweavers & Spinners Guild, you’ll get hands-on instruction, personalised guidance, and plenty of time to practise and experiment.
Learn to Dye
Time & Duration: 10:30am, 2 hours 30 minutes
Location: Art Studio, Mooroolbark Community Centre
Dive into the world of hand-dyed yarn! In this workshop, you’ll learn to dye a variegated skein of sock yarn by hand-painting with Landscapes dyes. Topics covered include yarn preparation, colour choice and mixing, and techniques for effects like self-striping or gradients. Learn how to calculate dye amounts and plan your project to achieve your desired knitted or woven result.
What you’ll take home:
One 100g skein of hand-painted sock yarn
One 20g mini skein
Detailed notes with instructions and tips
Please note: Finished yarn will be collected one hour after the session to allow for heating time. Additional yarn and dye packs will be available for purchase.
Who it’s for: Everyone is welcome, but especially beginners interested in learning to hand dye.

Felting Flowers
Time & Duration: 1:30pm, 2 hours 30 minutes
Location: Art Studio, Mooroolbark Community Centre
Dive into the world of felted fibre! In this workshop, you’ll learn to create two different styles of felted flowers while exploring foundational felting techniques. Topics covered include fibre layout, layering and shaping, as well as methods for creating structure and dimension. Learn how to build strong, even felt and apply these skills to future fibre projects.

Who it’s for: Everyone is welcome, even if you’ve never felted before.
